Over the past year, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce has made a commitment, through our Business Development Council, to provide more upport and programming to our small and medium-sized, women and minority-owned business members. So far, in 2008 we have held a seminar with Henry Gilford on the SBA 8(a) program, we are about to conduct seminars around the state on health insurance alternatives. We are also preparing to host the Maryland Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon on June 6 and hold two programs in the Fall on employee recruitment/retention and keys to business success.

Baltimore will take Broadway by storm on Thursday when John Waters' musical hit Cry-Baby premieres in New York City. BACVA is leveraging Baltimore's ties to the show and creator with ads in Playbill and a public relations push, which is beginning to pay off with more exposure for Baltimore. The New Yorker Magazine is the first to get in on that Baltimore buzz. Reporter Michael Schulman actually watched a preview of the show last week with BACVA President and CEO Tom Noonan, Chief Marketing Officer Sam Rogers and Vice President of Public Affairs Nancy Hinds at the Marquis Theatre and posted a story in the magazine's popular Talk of the Town section. BACVA is also leveraging Baltimore's ties to another Broadway production, Thurgood, with a Playbill ad. Thurgood opens April 30. A special micro-site has been developed for both shows with the headline, "Baltimore on Broadway."
